Visiting Chicago, Illinois, also known as The Windy City, was one of those trips that sticks with you long after you get home. From the second I arrived, I was completely taken in by the massive skyscrapers, nonstop movement, and the kind of energy you only get in a big city. This was my first time traveling up North, and honestly, that alone made everything feel extra exciting. I had seen Chicago in movies and TV shows my whole life, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. There’s something about Chicago that just feels larger than life. It’s bold, busy, loud, and beautiful all at the same time. Even though my visit was short, it was packed with moments that made me stop and think, Wow, I’m really here.
One of the first things that hit me about Chicago was the skyline. The buildings are tall—like, really tall—and everywhere you look, there’s another impressive structure reaching into the sky. Chicago doesn’t ease you into the experience; it jumps right out and makes sure you know you’re in a major city. The streets were buzzing with people going about their day, cars honking, trains rumbling overhead, and that constant background noise that somehow feels comforting in a city like this. It felt busy, but not chaotic. More like organized energy.
Being my first northern trip, everything felt new—from the way the city looked to the way it moved. Chicago instantly made me feel like I was part of something big. One of the moments I was most excited about (and didn’t even realize it until it happened) was riding the Chicago subway for the first time. I’ve seen it in movies forever, so actually stepping onto the train felt oddly familiar and brand new at the same time. I really didn’t know what to expect. There’s something special about experiencing public transportation in a big city. It makes you feel like a local, even if just for a moment. As the train moved through different parts of the city, I caught glimpses of neighborhoods, buildings, and everyday life in Chicago. Watching the city pass by through the windows was one of those simple but memorable experiences. By the time we made it downtown, I was officially hyped.
Downtown Chicago is impressive in every sense of the word. Walking through it felt like stepping straight into a postcard. The Magnificent Mile lived up to its name, offering incredible views of the skyline mixed with some of the best shopping in the city. If you love shopping—or even just window shopping—this area is dangerous in the best way. There’s something for every taste and budget, from high-end brands to more familiar stores. Some of the spots we passed included: Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Banana Republic Factory Store, and so many more. Even if you don’t buy anything, just walking around and taking in the atmosphere is worth it.
After a few hours of walking, browsing, and admiring the city views, I was more than ready for food—which worked out perfectly, because Chicago does food very well. Chicago is known for its food, and I quickly learned that the hype is absolutely deserved. From comfort food to classic city favorites, this place knows how to feed people. Let’s be real—you can’t visit Chicago and not try deep-dish pizza. As a pizza lover, this was non-negotiable. We headed straight to Giordano’s, one of the most famous pizza spots in the city. And let me tell you… it did not disappoint. The pizza was thick, cheesy, rich, and incredibly filling. This isn’t the kind of pizza you grab on the go—it’s the kind you sit down and commit to. Every bite felt indulgent, and I finally understood why Chicago takes its pizza so seriously. If deep-dish isn’t your thing, Giordano’s also has salads, chicken dishes, and Italian beef sandwiches, which makes it a solid option for groups with different tastes.
Another food stop that really hit the spot was Shake Shack at the Chicago Athletic Association. Sometimes you just want a good burger, and Shake Shack delivered exactly that. Juicy burgers, crispy fries, creamy milkshakes—it was the perfect refuel after walking around all day. The building itself made the experience even better. The Chicago Athletic Association has this beautiful historic feel that adds a little extra charm to a simple meal.
No trip to Chicago feels complete without a visit to Navy Pier, and it quickly became one of my favorite stops. Opened in 1916, Navy Pier has evolved from a shipping hub into one of the city’s most popular attractions. There’s a lot going on at Navy Pier, including: The Centennial Wheel, Cirque du Soleil shows, Shops and restaurants, and Entertainment for all ages. But honestly? One of the best parts was just standing there, taking it all in. Looking out over Lake Michigan was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip. The water stretched out forever, and for a moment, everything felt calm and still—something you don’t always get in a big city. Navy Pier has a fun, relaxed vibe, and it’s a great place to slow down while still feeling like you’re in the heart of Chicago.

Another major highlight of the trip was visiting the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. Even if you’re not into buildings or heights, this is one experience you don’t want to skip. Once the tallest building in the world, Willis Tower still offers some of the best views you’ll ever see. The elevator ride to the top was fast and exciting, and stepping onto the Skydeck was both thrilling and a little nerve-wracking. I was so scared. Standing high above the city, looking out over the skyline and Lake Michigan, was unreal. The view stretches for miles, and it really puts into perspective just how massive Chicago is. It’s one of those moments where you can’t help but stop, take photos, and just enjoy being there.
Even though my visit to Chicago wasn’t very long, it was packed with unforgettable experiences. From riding the subway and exploring downtown to eating deep-dish pizza, walking Navy Pier, and taking in the views from Willis Tower, every part of the trip felt worth it. Chicago has a personality all its own. It’s bold but welcoming, busy but beautiful, and full of history, food, and adventure. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another trip, there’s always something new to discover.
Chicago completely exceeded my expectations. It gave me big-city excitement, incredible food, iconic sights, and moments of calm all in one trip. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to explore more, stay longer, and come back again. Whether you’re into food, shopping, architecture, sightseeing, or just soaking up city vibes, Chicago has something for you. It’s a city that feels alive every second of the day. The Windy City left a lasting impression on me, and I already know this won’t be my last visit. There’s still so much more to see, eat, and experience—and next time, I plan to stay a little longer. If Chicago isn’t on your travel list yet, trust me—it should be.
